What is a Filipino treat that doubles as an after-meal drink, a dessert, and a snack and merienda refreshment?  It’s the same treat that combines texture and taste in a highly portable way.  It is none other than Sago’t Gulaman.

This popular drink is made of a seaweed based gelatin and Sago served with crushed ice.  If your mouth is watering then just grab these simple ingredients and be prepared to make this yummy summer drink, or serve it for dessert at your next barbeque.

You’ll need:

3 cups sugar

3 cups water

sago

cooked gulaman, cubed

crushed ice

your favorite glass

In a saucepan, boil water and add uncooked sago and stir.  Cook until transparent.  Drain, rinse and set aside.

In a saucepan, caramelize your sugar then pour in your water.  Cook together until the sugar is completely dissolved.  Cool entirely.  Add some of this cooled syrup to your sago.

Now put your sago and gulaman into your glass and enough syrup to sweeten the drink.  Fill the rest with crushed ice.  Repeat.
