Merianda is a special time each day when you eat between meals, literally meaning "a light snack" and is enjoyed in Europe, Latin America and the Philippines.  Think of this time as afternoon tea or tapas.  Yum.  Delicious treats like bread rolls, rice cakes or saba snacks alongside chaa/tsaa (tea), café/kape (coffee) or mainit na tsokolate (hot chocolate) makes merienda so delicious.  Below is a delicious recipe for mainit na tsokolate for you to sip on while you eat macaroons, leche-flan or mayura (find these recipes here).  Enjoy!

2 cups of chocolate, cut into small uniform pieces

6 cups milk

6 egg yolks

In a saucepan, heat milk and stir in chocolate piece by piece until the milk begins to boil and the chocolate melts completely.  Once the milk has thickened, add the egg yolks and stir briskly with a wire whisk until it’s foamy.   Really foamy.  Serve piping hot in your favorite mug.
