Literally this word translates to "native sweet delicacies".  Usually this means different types of rice cakes.  Think of them as rice turned into snacks!  There are many different types of kakanin to enjoy but all of them have three basic ingredients; glutinous rice, coconut milk, and sugar...the rest is up to you.

You can buy them ready made, or make your own from scratch.  Here's a recipe to get you started, have fun cooking and creating your own kakanin!  (I like them best alongside a cup of coffee and the afternoon news)

Suman

3 cups glutinous rice

2 teaspoons salt

2 cups thick coconut milk

banana leaves

 For the filling:

1.  Soak rice until grains swell (about an hour)

2.  Add salt, coconut water, and mix.

3.  Put into a pot and cover with water.  Boil for 2 hours.

For the wrapper:

1.  Fold end of banana leaf by 1 1/2 inches.

2. Fold the end into a triangle.

3.  Roll up the leaf into a tube and secure with a toothpick.

4.  Fill with rice filling.

5.  Seal and serve.
