Studies show that eating five small meals a day is much more beneficial to the body than eating three larger meals a day. This means that if you want to keep your body in the best shape possible, you need to learn to snack between meals to keep you metabolism going. In Filipino culture, merienda is a popular occurrence. Merienda is a light meal that happens in between larger meals. The next time you have your own merienda, you may want to look to some of the snack foods below. They should keep you fed without impacting your health in a negative way.

Look around for fruits that you like and make a snack out of them. Even a handful of grapes would suffice as a snack if it filled you up temporarily.

Cashews, almonds, walnuts, peanuts, pecans, hazelnuts – you can find all kinds of nuts to munch on for a snack. Some people do not like eating nuts on their own, but others find them to be quite delicious. If you need more than the nuts to eat, you can always make some trail mix out of them. That would be a great snack as well.

Yogurt is highly affordable, and it is low in calories. You can find yogurt in just about any flavor you want, so all you need to think about is what flavor will work for your personal taste. Use this as a snack shortly after breakfast, and you won't have to worry about losing your appetite for lunch.

Whole grain toast can easily fill you up, and it is healthy if you avoid excessive uses of butter. You can spread jam, peanut butter, or just about anything else on your toast and eat it for a snack. Look for natural breads, or consider making some on your own. That will give you the healthiest results possible.

Crackers and Cheese

This may not be a Filipino recipe, but it is still something that can fill you up in between meals. All you need is a set of whole grain crackers and some fresh cheese to make a great snack. The whole "cooking" process takes two minutes at most, and it is guaranteed to fill you up enough to wait for a meal. You can add some strips of lunch meat, or you could put a jalapeno on the cracker if you wanted to. It is up to you.
